Management Science and Socioeconomics
Ongoing research in this area involves the application of highly inter-disciplinary field, remote sensing, modeling and decision-tool development research, conducted in close affiliation with ongoing participatory integrated coastal management programs, to determine ways to identify or generate the appropriate overlapping ranges of feasible solution spaces, and to improve the accessibility to resource decision-makers, stakeholders, students, and others of relevant existing information and scenario-testing models. A strong emphasis is on the changing needs for management under climate change. Related studies focus on the future changes in water quality around the coral reefs of the Florida Keys.
Socioeconomic research includes an emphasis on the potential impacts of increasing coastal populations. Connectivity studies across the Caribbean, involving biological and hydrodynamic aspects, include a focus on the implications of shifting oceanographic features on coral reef recruitment
.Key Questions
What measures can be taken to ensure sustainable coastal development?
How do we manage and mitigate existing impacts in already disturbed areas and can reefs be restored once impacts have been mitigated?
What lessons can be drawn from management successes in other regions and from the past?
How should marine reserves be designed to maximize the recovery potential of reefs?
